Good to know
Profit = sale price − sales fee − cost. Margin divides by sale price; markup divides by cost. Markup is undefined for zero cost. Fixed fees and other expenses are not included.
Cost: 6000 Sale price: 10000 Sales fee (%): 5
Understand and use your results
Check profit on an item after a percentage sales fee. Margin and markup use different denominators, so they are not interchangeable.
How to use it
- Enter cost, sale price and a fee rate based on the sale price.
- Inspect profit after fees and the resulting margin.
Worked example
cost: 6000, sale: 10000, fee: 5%
fees: 500 profit: 3500 margin: 35%
Profit is 10,000 − 500 − 6,000 = 3,500. Margin is 3,500 ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 35%; markup on cost is about 58.33%.
Which expenses are not included?
Fixed payment charges, packaging, shipping, advertising, taxes and returns are separate. Markup is undefined at zero cost, and a zero sale price is rejected. Negative profit means a loss under the supplied inputs.
