Good to know
Identical bytes produce the same digest. Text uses UTF-8. Hashing is not encryption or a password-storage KDF. Files are limited to 50 MB.
Operation: text Algorithm: SHA-256 Input: abc
Understand and use your results
Compare files or check against a published SHA checksum. Input bytes become a fixed-length digest; this is not reversible encryption.
How to use it
- Select text or a file and choose the same SHA algorithm as the reference.
- Compare the complete digest. Files with the same name can contain different bytes.
Worked example
abc (SHA-256, no newline)

Text is encoded as UTF-8. Adding a newline after abc changes the bytes and therefore the digest. File mode hashes file contents rather than the filename.
Does a matching digest mean a file is safe?
Matching a digest from a trusted distributor helps confirm the bytes you received. A digest is not malware scanning or proof of authorship. Password storage requires a dedicated password-hashing scheme rather than plain SHA.
